Event Explainer
Haldi & Mehndi Ceremony
The Haldi ceremony in Hindu weddings is a cherished pre-wedding ritual filled with tradition and symbolism. During this auspicious event, a blend of turmeric (haldi), fragrant sandalwood, and other sacred ingredients is lovingly applied to the bride and groom by their dear family and friends. This ancient practice is steeped in the belief that it purifies and bestows blessings upon the couple, ushering in good fortune while warding off malevolent spirits before their union. Beyond its spiritual significance, the Haldi ceremony is a jubilant occasion brimming with music, dance, and sheer joy, creating a vibrant tapestry of celebration and camaraderie.
The Mehndi ceremony is when loved ones, predominantly women, come together to adorn intricate natural henna designs. These exquisite patterns are believed to usher in a wave of good fortune, joy, and boundless love to those who embellish their skin with them. The Mehndi ceremony is also filled with music, laughter, and playful traditions that bring both families closer. It marks the beginning of wedding festivities with vibrant colors, celebration, and heartfelt blessings for the couple.
Sangeet
Sangeet, derived from the Hindi word for “music,” is a vibrant pre-wedding celebration. This enchanting evening unfolds as a symphony of song, dance, and jubilant performances, uniting the friends and families of the bride and groom in a harmonious celebration of their impending union.
Hindu Wedding
The wedding ceremony will follow Hindu traditions, which are rich in symbolism and joy. The ceremony takes place under a beautifully decorated canopy called a Mandap. Sacred fire, flowers, and chants in Sanskrit bless the union, while each ritual — from exchanging floral garlands to walking around the fire (pheras)— represents promises of love, respect, and partnership. The Baraat is one of the most vibrant and joyful moments of a Hindu wedding. It’s the groom’s grand entrance, where he arrives with his family and friends in a lively procession filled with music, dancing, and celebration. Traditionally, the groom may ride a decorated horse. The procession makes its way to the wedding venue, with everyone dancing alongside to the beat of the dhol (Indian drum).
Western Wedding
A Western wedding is a time-honored ceremony steeped in European and North American customs. Led by a celebrant, the ceremony is a poignant moment where vows are exchanged and rings are shared, symbolizing a public declaration of commitment. Post-ceremony, guests gather for a joyous reception with dinner, heartfelt speeches, the symbolic cutting of the cake, and lively dancing. Traditions such as the first dance embody the couple’s unity and dedication to journey through life together, while the shared act of cutting the cake signifies their initial joint task as a married pair, a gesture of mutual support and care.
